The Kent Human Services Commission has recommended funding for 29 nonprofit programs to be included in Mayor Suzette Cooke’s 2009 proposed budget.
The 10-member commission made the recommendation Aug. 8 after two days of discussion and reading more than 1,500 pages of information about human services programs seeking financial support, according to a city of Kent media release.
The city allocates 1 percent of its general fund each year to help fund human services programs. The city will pay more than $800,000 in 2009 to the programs.
Among the programs recommended to receive funds are Catholic Community Services, Community Health Centers, Communities in Schools, Domestic Violence Agency With Shelter (DAWN), Kent Food Bank, Kent Youth and Family Services, Multi-Service Center and Safe Havens.
The Commission also recommended funding for six programs through the Community Development Block Grant, representing an additional $138,500.
Cooke will present her 2009 budget to the City Council in September.
City Councilwoman Elizabeth Albertson and eight city residents serve on the Human Services Commission.
Those residents are Cathy Peters, Jon Botten, Dini Duclos, Brett Hollis, Wilbur Vincent, Maya Vengadasalam, Tamara Sleeman, and Roda Barket.
