A Kent man reportedly shot and injured a burglary suspect early Tuesday morning, Sept. 3 in the 26600 block of 134th Avenue SE, near Lake Meridian.
Officers were dispatched at about 1:27 a.m. after a 911 caller said he had shot at a man who was burglarizing his house, but was unsure if he had hit the suspect, according to a Sept. 3 Kent Police news release.
Multiple officers responded to the home and immediately began to search for the burglar. The homeowner, a 34-year-old man, advised that he had been sleeping in his bedroom with his wife, when an unknown man entered their bedroom and turned on the light, according to police.
The homeowner said that his children were also in the residence, and he was unable to determine if the suspect was armed, or if he was alone. The suspect fled the room when he noticed the couple, allowing the homeowner to retrieve his gun.
The man advised responding officers that he shot at the suspect but was unsure if he struck him, according to police. He said that he last saw the suspect running out of their backyard. The homeowner has a concealed pistol license and was legally in possession of the gun at the time of the shooting, according to police.
Officers located items stolen from the home nearby as they searched the area.
At 3:05 a.m. Tuesday, officers were dispatched to an apartment in the 14900 block of SE 272nd Street for a medical call involving a subject with a gunshot wound, according to police. They located a man reportedly matching the description of the burglary suspect with a gunshot wound to his torso. The apartment is just over a mile away from the reported burglary.
Officers immediately applied a chest seal to the open wound; Puget Sound Fire firefighters arrived and continued medical treatment, according to police. The man, a 39-year-old Kent resident, was transported to a hospital for additional medical treatment.
Detectives responded and are investigating the circumstances surrounding the residential burglary and shooting, according to police.
Detectives are asking people who live in the area of the incident to check their home video surveillance systems to determine if the burglary suspect was seen near their home early Tuesday.
