Jaylin Miller, a fifth grader at Star Lake Elementary in Kent, was inducted into the AAA School Safety Patrol Hall of Fame last Friday in recognition of her dedication to safety, community stewardship and leadership.
Miller was one of 10 outstanding patrollers from throughout Washington recognized at the evening awards ceremony held before the Seattle Mariners game at Safeco Field.
As a long-standing tradition, AAA Washington and a panel of judges from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction and the Washington Traffic Safety Commission select top patrollers from schools throughout the state each year, and honor their accomplishments through induction in the AAA School Safety Patrol Hall of Fame.
Patrollers are evaluated and judged on their commitment to traffic safety, citizenship, leadership skills and contributions to school safety patrol programs. Nominations require input from both the patroller and their advisor, including responses to a series of essay questions.
Miller was chosen for her outstanding leadership as described:
Miller is well respected by her peers and is considered a role model for how responsible, patient, trustworthy and respectful she is. As one of the patrol captains, she leads by example and is eager to teach fellow patrollers and schoolmates about the importance of safety. Miller has taken on additional responsibilities to help train new patrollers and helps determine which post each patroller will be responsible for each day. She weighs factors including experience, skill, availability and coordinates assignments determined on the needs of each post. She is a great example of a student who demonstrates responsibility and leadership when it comes to ensuring pedestrian safety.
“It is a pleasure to work with someone who understands that the needs of the team can outweigh those of the individual,” her advisor, Harry Leonard, wrote in her nomination.
