A hit-and-run collision on a highway in Spain seriously injured a Kent couple Sunday morning, according to media reports and family members.

The crash on the A-7 – a highway along Spain’s east coast outside Valencia – left Jacqueline Myers, 71, in a coma with critical injuries. Her husband, Patrick Myers, 77, was hospitalized in stable condition with head trauma, family members described on GoFundMe.com.

The couple were touring the country.

A Spanish newspaper’s account of the wreck described the driver as “reckless … a Seat Leon vehicle that circulated ‘skipping the rules’ and that after the incident has been on the run.”

The driver who fled the scene was later apprehended, according to local police.

According to the family, Jacqueline Myers suffered blunt-force trauma to the head, broken ankles, a fractured lumbar vertebrae, a punctured lung and extensive internal bleeding. Surgery stopped internal bleeding but it induced a coma, the family said.

Patrick Myers sustained blunt-force trauma to the head, along with bruising on the brain and several soft-tissue injuries, the family said.

A GoFundMe campaign is underway to help the family with medical costs. Jessica Ortega and Hugo Castaneda are organizing the fundraiser.

“They are far away from home, family and friends,” the website said. “Our goal and challenge is to have our mother come out of her coma with one of her children present. Our ultimate hope would be to have the funds to help facilitate to get her an air ambulance home to be surrounded by family. Mom selflessly has been there for everyone and we need to be there if/when she awakes. We love them both immensely.”
