The Washington Association of Sheriffs and Police Chiefs (WASPC) recognized the City of Kent Corrections Facility with successfully becoming newly accredited at its fall training conference in Chelan on Nov. 15.
Kent is the first city agency in Washington that is recognized as dual accredited by successfully completing the accreditation requirement for police operations and jail management. The city jail is at 1230 Central Ave. S.
The purpose of law enforcement agency accreditation is to professionalize the law enforcement industry by providing a review process for agencies to be certified as operating under industry best practices and standards. Law enforcement agencies seeking state accreditation in jail management must gain compliance with 148 jail standards.
“I am proud of the work the men and women of this agency do every day and by receiving state accreditation through WASPC acknowledges the transparency and professionalism exhibited by our personnel,” said Chief Ken Thomas.
The WASPC Accreditation program was started 30 years ago and was one of the first programs of its kind in America. Many other state and national accrediting organizations have modeled their programs after WASPC. The WASPC program requires agency compliance with operational and administrative standards.
Twenty-five percent of law enforcement agencies in Washington are recognized with WASPC accreditation.
