TV Japan is now available for free for Comcast Digital subscribers in order for friends and family to follow the news about the earthquake and tsunami that struck Japan Thursday.

TV Japan is available on Comcast Digital Channel 245 and free to subscribers with any level of service.

“I want to share with you the news that we are making TV Japan available to all digital subscribers given yesterday’s tragic earthquake,” said Terry Davis, Comcast director of government affairs in the South Puget Sound area, in an e-mail to Kent, Tukwila and other jurisdictions served by the company.

Viewers can watch TV Japan for free through March 18. The channel provides ongoing coverage of the disaster in Japanese.

“I know many of you have community members from Japan and Sister City relationships as well,” Davis said. “We are trying to help keep people informed as news breaks.”

The city of Kent’s Sister City delegation is attempting to communicate with officials in Japan but has not heard anything yet, said Michelle Witham, city of Kent community and public affairs manager, on Friday.

Kent has a Sister City affiliation with Tamba, Japan an agricultural community located in the Khogo Prefecture, Hansai region north of Kobe. The Kent-Tamba relationship spans a period of 40 years.
