Dave Bilyeu, the Kent School District’s director of Career and Technical Education, has been named the Kent Chamber of Commerce Educator of the Year.
He was nominated by the Kent Community Foundation for his work on its education committee and bridging the gap between school and business.
“I was honored to be nominated and to receive the recognition, but I am most proud of the work teachers do every day supporting students and making them aware of the career opportunities available to them.” Bilyeu, who has worked for 30 years in education, said in a press release from the school district.
For the past 13 years, Bilyeu has managed the vocational programs at the district’s middle and high schools. During his tenure, he has worked closely with the local businesses creating internships and work-based learning programs for students. He has also expanded computer programing and application courses to reflect the skills required in the career world.
Bilyeu formed 13 advisory committees comprised of 150 community business members to align the career and technical curriculum with industry standards and help identify the skills and requirements necessary for students in careers or college.
More than 5,000 students participate in career and technical courses each semester.
