The Kent Black Action Commission presents Our Place in the March on Saturday, Aug. 27, from 2 to 5 p.m. at Burlington Green Park, West Meeker and Railroad Avenue North.
The event celebrates the 53rd anniversary of the March on Washington, D.C., when Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. gave his historic “I have a dream” speech.
The program will include a replay of King’s speech, voter’s registration, speakers and music. The program is an opportunity for leaders and residents to come together and discuss and improve relations within the community.
Donations of clothing, school supplies and other basic needs will be collected at the tribute to support the flood victims of Baton Rouge, La.
The public also can drop off donations at C&G Hair and Beauty Supply, 24228 104th Ave. SE, Kent.
KBAC, which began as a small grassroots group with a clear mission, has become something bigger in the local community. KBAC – established on the foundation of kindling opportunities and advancing conditions of the African-American community – took a significant step in 2013 when Gov. Jay Inslee recognized the nonprofit organization for its efforts.
Such an honor – in the official form of a governor’s proclamation – was announced in concert with the KBAC’s Our Place in the March celebration three years ago, commemorating the 50th anniversary of King’s speech.
