Isaiah Jones-Kulow served as a page in the state Senate during the week of March 11.
Sen. Karen Keiser, D-Kent, sponsored Jones-Kulow’s week in the Legislature.
“It was a privilege to host Isaiah at the Capitol this week,” Keiser said. “I hope that he enjoyed his week in Olympia and learned a lot about the Legislature while he was here!”
The page program offers a hands-on opportunity for students to find out how state government works. The educational experience is furthered by guest speakers. It also includes classes with topics like budget writing and how a bill becomes a law, which culminates in pages creating their own bills in a mock committee setting.
“I enjoyed getting to meet a lot of cool people while I was here,” Jones-Kulow said. “Meeting both Sen. Keiser and the State Treasurer (Duane Davidson) was really great.”
Pages also have the opportunity to work on the Senate floor while the Senate is in session. Their maroon coats and credentials allow them access to all parts of the Capitol Campus.
Jones-Kulow is in ninth grade at Excel Public Charter School, where he plays basketball. He is also a student ambassador, meaning he works with other students and school administration to make improvements to the school. In his free time, he enjoys playing other sports as well as spending time with family.
