It appears the Indoor Football League won’t have a decision about the future of the Kent Predators until Monday or Tuesday.
“We’re still working on this as we speak,” said IFL Commissioner Tommy Benizio in a phone interview Friday from league headquarters in Richmond, Va. “I remain optimistic that the team will continue, and be even stronger and more enthusiastic than they were in the past.”
IFL officials are reviewing an ownership change that would return the team to Kent for a second season starting in February at the ShoWare Center. Benizio had hoped to reach a decision Friday about whether to approve the ownership change.
“We might require more information and it could take another business day or two,” Benizio said.
League meetings among owners start on Monday.
“It’s a little helter-skelter around here,” Benizio said.
The Predators are scheduled to open the season Feb. 25 at the ShoWare Center. They have seven home games scheduled for the 2011 season.
Ken Moninski, the current owner of the Predators, has put the pro team up for sale. After a deal fell through last week to sell the Predators to the Michael Tuckman-led West Coast Sports of the Puget Sound area, Moninski found another interested group of buyers.
Neither Moninski nor Benizio would reveal the names of the potential new owners.
Benizio said league officials are reviewing the new owners to decide if they have the financial backing and business savvy to run the Predators.
Tim Higgins, ShoWare Center general managers, said Friday he had not heard from the IFL about whether the ownership change had been approved.
