A dispute between a husband and wife over wet, dirty laundry in Kent ended in a tussle by the dryer and the arrest of the husband for investigation of fourth-degree assault.
Officers responded at about 9:42 a.m. on July 2 to a house in the 3500 block of South 261st Place, according to the police report. The wife called 911 to report her husband had pushed her.
The husband reportedly took his wife’s wet laundry out of the dryer and put it in a milk crate on the garage floor so he could dry his clothes. That move upset the wife because the crate was dirty, so she began to remove his clothes from the dryer to put her laundry back in. The two began to push each other in attempts to gain control of the dryer.
The wife told officers she suffered a scratch on her arm after her husband pushed her. The husband said she cut herself when she unplugged the dryer. The wife didn’t want to press charges or have her husband taken to jail. She told officers when they lived in Chicago and they had issues like this, police would show up and make her husband leave.
Officers told the wife state law makes it mandatory to arrest someone during an domestic violence assault if an injury occurred.
The husband said to police as officers handcuffed him, “All this over a dryer?”
Woman attacks boyfriend
Police arrested a homeless woman for investigation of fourth-degree assault after she reportedly hit her boyfriend in the head with a metal object during a dispute at about 8:07 a.m. on June 30 in the 24700 block of 104th Avenue Southeast.
The man called 911 to report that his girlfriend was hitting him as he walked down the sidewalk, according to the police report. An officer saw the woman yelling at a man and slapping his head. The man was bleeding from a cut above his eye.
The officer handcuffed the woman, and noted she had slurred speech, bloodshot eyes and a strong odor of alcohol. The boyfriend told police they had dated for about six months and that his girlfriend lived in a homeless camp with another couple while he stayed at a friend’s house.
When the boyfriend visited the woman, she claimed he had been talking to police to end their relationship, which upset her so she hit him in the head with a metal object, possibly a hammer, the boyfriend told officers.
The woman denied the assault. She told officers her boyfriend had said offensive things to her about her sexual promiscuity, so she got upset when he visited her at a camp in the woods near the corner of Southeast 248th Street and 104th Avenue Southeast.
Crash witness threatened
Officers arrested a man for investigation of reckless driving and provoking assault after he allegedly drove his vehicle at a high rate of speed, hit another vehicle and then threatened the other driver.
A couple of witnesses told officers they saw a driver of a red Camero at about 6:53 p.m. on July 3 going eastbound at a high rate of speed on Willis Street, according to the police report. The driver swerved his car into another vehicle, and both drivers stopped near Bridges Avenue.
The Camero driver reportedly started to yell at a woman who saw the crash. When the driver of the other vehicle stepped in to calm the man down, he threatened that man.
When officers arrived, the Camero driver began to call one of them a “racist cop.”
Man loses shoes while fleeing
Police arrested a man for investigation of theft, obstructing an officer and a warrant at about 12:11 p.m. on July 4 in the 25200 block of Pacific Highway South.
The incident began when the man reportedly stole a cellphone from a woman standing outside of the Fred Meyer store, according to the police report. The man fled on foot.
Officers located the man nearby, but he ran again, losing his shoes as he fled. An hour or so later, Des Moines Police found the man near South 240th Street and 26th Place South, still without any shoes.
The man told police he had bought heroin previously from the woman who stood outside of Fred Meyer. He said when he walked near her she called him a snitch, which upset him, so he took her phone. He said he later gave the phone to a man at a bus stop.
The woman told officers she was homeless and had seen the man on the streets on the West Hill. The man had a warrant out of Kent for failure to appear at a vehicle prowl hearing.
Woman caught with drugs
Officers arrested a woman for investigation of possession of drug paraphernalia and several warrants after finding her parked in a vehicle at about 10:39 p.m. on June 30 in the 23200 block of Pacific Highway South.
An officer was on patrol near the Comfort Dental clinic because of numerous reports of assaults, trespassing, drug dealing and prostitution in the area, according to the police report.
The officer saw a vehicle parked by the clinic and near a bus stop, where people often do drug deals. When the officer talked to the woman in a vehicle and ran a records check, he discovered she had warrants for failure to appear on an assault charge and violation of a no-contact order.
