Husband, wife die in Kent mobile home fire

Man ran inside to try to save his wife

A husband and wife died in a Monday morning fire in Kent at the Circle K Mobile Home Park in the 800 block of West Valley Highway.

The husband died after he went inside to try to rescue his wife, said Keith Kepler, Puget Sound Fire spokesman, in a phone interview Monday. Both were found in a bedroom at the home.

The cause of the fire has yet to be determined, Kepler said. The fire broke out at about 8:26 a.m.

A man who shared the home with the couple had just left to go to work when he turned around and saw smoke from the home near the bedroom area, Kepler said. The man called 911. The husband was on his way home from work.

“The husband works a graveyard shift and was just seconds away,” Kepler said. “He was there before the engine and ran into the trailer to get his wife.”

Kepler said that mobile home fires burn really hot and fast. Crews took about five minutes to arrive at the mobile home park and had the fire knocked down in about 10 to 12 minutes. Firefighters managed to stop the fire from spreading into a second mobile home, although the heat busted a window in the unit next door.

Kepler said the husband and wife reportedly were in their late 40s or early 50s. Firefighters found them in a bedroom. The King County Medical Examiner’s Office will identify the couple.

“It’s a very tight-knit community,” Kepler said. “There were about a half dozen folks visiting with each other and some family members showed up.”

A police and fire chaplain reported to the scene to help console friends and family, Kepler said.
