Gregerson to chair State Government and Tribal Relations Committee

State Rep. Mia Gregerson will chair the State Government and Tribal Relations Committee beginning in the 2019 legislative session in Olympia.

Gregerson, D-SeaTac, represents the 33rd District, which includes parts of Kent, Burien and Renton and the cities of Des Moines, SeaTac and Normandy Park.

The committee oversees general state government policy including issues related to elections, campaign finance and state agency rule making, according to a House Democrats news release. Additionally, the committee will work with tribal governments and members on state policy that affects tribes.

“It is an honor to be selected as the new chair of State Government and Tribal Relations,” Gregerson said. “Since becoming a legislator, I have worked to expand access to democracy and ensure that government at all levels reflects the diversity of our state. As chair of this committee, I plan to continue advocating for policies that will strengthen our democracy, provide more accountability and transparency in elections, and make sure that the voters in our state are empowered to elect leaders that represent them.”

Gregerson was first appointed to represent the 33rd District in 2013. During last session, Gregerson sat on the Local Government, Transportation, and State Government, Elections & Information Technology committees, and served as vice chair of the Labor & Workplace Standards committee.

“As a representative of the incredibly diverse 33rd Legislative District and as a Chinese-American woman, I feel a special calling to try to bring inclusivity and equity to our state wherever I can,” Gregerson said. “As chair, I will be pursuing initiatives to give voice to those who have historically been left out of the political process, including helping to break down silos and barriers that exist between state government and tribes.”
