Green River Community College hosts the First Peoples Conference on Thursday in an effort to connect Native students and families with local and regional education and service organizations and raise regional awareness of indigenous culture.
This is the first time an event like this has been held in the area.
“Our region is becoming increasingly diverse, and the First Peoples Conference is a great way for people representing different cultures to connect and raise awareness,” said Green River President Eileen Ely.
Conference organizers expect participants from area K-12 schools, colleges, indigenous community organizations, the Muckleshoot Indian Tribe and the Puyallup Nation. It features precollege workshops, indigenous sacred chants, dances and traditional storytelling. Community resources and Green River departments will be on hand to provide assistance to conference participants. Conference workshops will be led by student groups including the Latino and Pacific Islander student unions
The First Peoples Conference runs from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Green River’s main campus in Auburn. The event is free and open to the public. To attend the dinner, register in person at Green River’s Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion at the main campus by 5 p.m. on April 23.
