As a new quarter began Monday at Green River College, organizations were at the main campus in Auburn to welcome students.
Inspirus Credit Union, based in Tukwila, handed out 135 gift cards to Green River’s bookstore. Students had the opportunity to spin a wheel to determine if they would get a $10, $25 or $50 gift card.
“We know how expensive it can be for students to go back to school, whether they are paying for their tuition, a calculator for one of their classes or textbooks,” said Inspirus spokeswoman Morgan Cole. “We really wanted to offset the cost of them going back to school by giving them gift cards to the bookstore so that they can purchase the textbooks they need and all of the other supplies they need.”
Inspirus has partnered with Green River College in the past, including pledging $20,000 over three years to the school’s Completion Fund, which helps students close to graduating overcome hurdles to get their diploma.
“Inspirus values education and we want to support the students and life-long learners in Washington state, and this is one way for us to give back to them and help them continue their education,” Cole said of the bookstore giveaway. “We just wanted to give them a really good start to the new school year.”
Inspirus also hosted bookstore giveaways at Highline College and Everett Community College.
Representatives from Green River Student Life gave away T-shirts, Frisbees, cups, bags and umbrellas outside of the Mel Lindbloom Student Center.
