The Greater Kent Historical Society Museum presents a book discussion and historic walking tour of the life of a Kent pioneer.
The April 13 program describes Ezra Meeker’s experiences during the Klondike Gold Rush. The program is 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the museum, 855 E. Smith St., Kent.
“Slick as a Mitten: Ezra Meeker’s Klondike Enterprise,” by Dennis M. Larsen, chronicles Meeker, who started a business in the Yukon that provisioned the miners with tons of canned goods and fresh vegetables grown and processed in the Green/White River Valley.
Today, the Meeker name is attached to local schools, streets and buildings.
Participants can read the book in advance and join the discussion about how that get-rich-quick period in the Far North influenced development in the Kent area. Following the book talk, the group will offer a walking tour of historical downtown Kent, where several buildings were constructed with funds gained during the Klondike Gold Rush.
Wear good walking shoes and come dressed for the weather.
