Dozens of shots were exchanged between rival gang members but nobody was injured during a Sunday afternoon shooting along South 212th Street in the Kent Valley.
Officers responded at about 12:16 p.m. Aug. 27 to reports of shots fired in the parking lot at the Shell service station, 6331 S. 212th St., said Kent Police spokeswoman Melanie Robinson in an email. The shooting spilled over onto South 212th Street near the Amazon Fulfillment Center.
“Two different vehicles were involved and were firing at each other, both vehicles had multiple passengers inside and fled prior to Kent patrols arrival,” Robinson said. “There were multiple shots fired for unknown reasons at this time, no one was injured. There were, however, multiple vehicles that were in the vicinity during the incident that were unfortunately hit as a result of the reckless shooting.”
No arrests have been made, Robinson said on Thursday, as detectives continue to investigate the incident.
“We have information to believe that the shooting was gang related,” she said.
About 30 shots were exchanged, according to a twice-monthly report to the City Council from Derek Matheson, city chief administrative officer. He noted four vehicles not involved in the shooting exchange were hit by bullets.
Shell casings from two guns were found in the gas station parking lot and additional casings were found along South 212th Street. Police also found two bullet jackets and two bullet fragments.
One witness posted to the Kent Reporter Facebook page what they saw.
“We were there and almost hit one of the cars that went through a red light with our motorhome as he was shooting out the window.”
