No matter what your age, it can be difficult to know how to pick a health plan.

Most people have questions. You may have heard about a Health Benefit Exchange starting in the fall — what will that mean for you and your family? For those nearing or beyond age 65, Medicare terms like Part D and doughnut hole can make your head spin.

The Seattle-King County Advisory Council on Aging & Disability Services will host a forum about health care insurance at noon on Friday, Aug. 9, at the Kent Senior Activity Center, 600 E. Smith St.

The forum features Liz Mercer from Statewide Health Insurance Benefits Advisors (SHIBA) — a program sponsored by the Office of the Washington State Insurance Commissioner — who will discuss how the Affordable Care Act might affect you and how you can access free, unbiased and confidential assistance with Medicare and health care choices.

In addition, 33rd District State Sen. Karen Keiser, D-Kent, and State Rep. Dave Upthegrove, D-Des Moines, will discuss recent legislative action related to health care coverage and other health care priorities.

Sign-in starts at 11 a.m. outside the meeting room. Doors open at 11:45 a.m. and lunch is available. The forum runs from noon to 1:15 p.m.

Of special note, space is limited so tickets are required, and there is a small charge to cover lunch costs. The first 80 tickets cost $2 each — limit 2 per person. After 80, tickets cost $6 each.

For tickets, call 253-856-5150.

The mission of the Seattle-King County Advisory Council for Aging & Disability Services is to identify the needs of older people and adults with disabilities in our community; advise on services to meet these needs; and advocate for local, state and national programs that promote quality of life for these populations.
