Daniel, Meridian, Ridgewood, and Sawyer Woods elementary schools and Kent Mountain View Academy are in the top 20 percent of Washington state schools on multiple measures, including closing achievement gaps and having all student groups achieving at a high level.
This spring, in the first phase of the new state school recognition system, 216 schools are being recognized that have demonstrated exemplary performance or made significant progress closing opportunity and achievement gaps in the Washington School Improvement Framework (WSIF) measures. Staff and students are commended for their hard work and dedication to teaching and learning.
• George T. Daniel Elementary School
Principal: Patty Drobny
Growth in the WSIF metrics while narrowing the gap between the highest and lowest performing student groups. All student groups are performing at 6.0 or higher on the 2019 WISF, well above the state average.
• Meridian Elementary School
Principal: Stephanie Barringer
Closing gaps and demonstrating improvement among student groups identified for support.
• Ridgewood Elementary School
Principal: Cynthia Green
Closing gaps and demonstrating improvement among student groups identified for support.
• Sawyer Woods Elementary School
Principal: Tim Helgeson
High Achievement in English language acquisition, math and school quality student success measures.
• Kent Mountain View Academy
Principal: Stephanie Knipp
High achievement and growth in English language acquisition and school quality student success measures. They are the only school in the state to be recognized for both growth and achievement.
Recognition criteria measures for the first year include growth and achievement on academic indicators (proficiency, growth, graduation rate, English language progress) as well as school quality and student success measures (dual credit participation, regular attendance, and ninth grade on track rates).
Over the past year, the State Board of Education (SBE), the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI), and the Educational Opportunity Gap Oversight and Accountability Committee (EOGOAC) worked together to revise the Washington state school recognition system to more equitably recognize schools for their commitment to providing all students an opportunity to reach their educational goals.
