The Kent Police Department wants to remind residents that fireworks are illegal in the city.
The City Council approved the ban in 2016 after 62 percent of Kent voters favored a ban in a November 2015 advisory vote to the council. Numerous complaints from residents to the council about fireworks going off in their neighborhoods before, during and after the Fourth of July caused the council to consider a ban and ask for the advisory vote.
Residents won’t have the option this summer of watching a fireworks show at the city-sponsored Fourth of July Splash event at Lake Meridian Park. The city cancelled that event earlier this year because of the COVID-19 pandemic and the governor’s order to restrict crowds.
“We realize that with the cancellation of Splash, you may be tempted to light a few off this year,” according to the Kent Police post on Facebook. “Please resist, be safe and find other ways to make a memorable celebration with your families.”
People can report fireworks violations by calling the non-emergency Kent Police number at 253-852-2121. Residents are asked not to call 911 about fireworks unless there is an immediate safety concern.
It is unlawful for any person to discharge or possess fireworks of any kind within the city. According to city code:
• Discharging fireworks at any time is illegal, and subject to a $250 ticket and the seizure of your fireworks
• Discharge of fireworks in a reckless manner or possession of more than 20 pounds is a gross misdemeanor, punishable by up to one year in jail and/or a $5,000 fine
The city will close Lake Meridian Park at 9 p.m. on July 4. In addition, both parking lots will close at 7:30 p.m. After 7:30 p.m., the lots will be exit only.
