Firefighters quickly responded and doused a house fire in the 600 block of Railroad Avenue South on Saturday afternoon, the Puget Sound Fire Authority reported

There were no injuries. The family – two adults and five children – and their three dogs had safely evacuated when firefighters arrived on scene.

Firefighters from Puget Sound Fire, who were dispatched at 11:56 a.m., found a two-story home with heavy smoke coming from the southwest corner of the roof. Quickly determining it was a fire in the wall and ceiling, next to the metal chimney, firefighters used chainsaws to cut into the area and put the fire out.

Damage was limited to the upstairs bedroom.

A fire investigator determined the cause of the fire was due to the chimney pipe drying out the wood in the wall over time, which eventually allowed it to ignite.

Units from South King Fire and Rescue, Zone Three Explorer Rehab Unit, and King County Medic One also responded to this incident.

Red Cross was called and is helping the family.

This fire reminds those to have proper clearances from home heating devices and working smoke alarms.
