Kent firefighters put out a fire at a duplex early Friday morning in the 900 block of Fourth Avenue North.

A neighbor reported smoke and a cracking sound at about 12:54 a.m., according to a Kent Fire Department Regional Fire Authority media release. Nobody was home when the fire broke out.

An electrical failure in the garage caused the accidental fire, said Kyle Ohashi, spokesman for the Kent Fire Department. It isn’t possible to give a more exact cause because of the amount of damage, he said.

Firefighters arrived to find fire and smoke coming from the first floor of the two-story duplex and extending into the second story.

Firefighters changed the incident-type to a working residential fire which brings in additional fire units and support personnel. They immediately began attacking the fire from the outside to knock it down until other resources arrived.

Once inside the structure two searches were done in the home to look for victims while the firefighting efforts continued. No one was found in the structure. Nobody was injured.

Firefighters were able to contain the fire to the home where it started and protected the other attached residence from damage.

In addition to firefighters from Kent, a ladder truck from the Valley Regional Fire Authority, King County Medic One and the Zone 3 Fire Explorers also responded to the call.
