Firefighters battle tough blaze at Kent vacant home

2nd floor collapses into 1st floor forcing firefighters to cut holes in the roof to put out hotspots

It took firefighters approximately 90 minutes to extinguish a Kent vacant house fire and another three hours to put out the hotspots.

Firefighters responded at about 2:38 a.m. Monday, Aug. 7 to a home in the 2o400 block of 91st Avenue South, according to an email from Puget Sound Fire spokesperson Pat Pawlak.

“This was a particularly difficult task since the firefighters could not enter the house due to it being unstable,” Pawlak said. “During the fire extinguishment operations, the second floor collapsed into the first floor. This compromised the integrity of the walls and roof. The firefighters had to cut holes in the roof from the ladder truck to access the hotspots.”

Ten fire department units and 22 fire department personnel responded, Pawlak said. In addition, King County Medic One and the Zone 3 Fire Cadets also responded.

The cause of the fire is undetermined, Pawlak said.
