Firefighters from the Kent Regional Fire Authority and Valley Regional Fire Authority were dispatched to the 13100 block of Southeast 266th Place at 3:33 p.m. Monday when 911 callers reported a shed fire near a home just north of the Trader Joe’s shopping complex.
While en route, they were also informed that a man with limited mobility was possibly trapped on the second story of the home that was less than 10 feet from the shed, according to a Kent RFA media release.
When firefighters arrived, they were able to rescue the trapped, but uninjured, man. Everyone else was able to get out safely on their own. Six people live in the house. There were no injuries.
Flames from the shed were able to enter bird blocking on the back of the house and spread into the attic space. Firefighters worked for approximately 20 minutes to fully contain the fire.
One other complication to this fire was the fact that the fence that backed up against the fire hydrant was burning, due to the shed, and created an extra danger for the firefighter who connected the hoses from the fire engines. The heat from the fire melted street signs near the home.
Red Cross assisted the family.
Fire investigators are trying to determine the cause.
