Four people were displaced after a patio fire extended into the attic space of their Kent home Friday in the 23700 block of 160th Avenue Southeast.
Firefighters from the Puget Sound and Maple Valley fire departments reported seeing the fire’s glow from several blocks away while responding at 1:13 a.m. When they arrived on scene, they found fire coming from the back and roof of the two-story home, according to a Puget Sound Fire media release.
The single occupant home at the time of the fire got out safely. There were no reported injuries.
Fire investigators determined a discarded cigarette caused the fire. The resulting fire burned the deck before spreading into the attic space through the bird blocking. Investigators consider the cause accidental.
This fire required firefighters to lay over 1,000 feet of large diameter fire hose down a long private road and driveway. To keep up adequate water pressure, three engines were used along the length of hose, each receiving and re-pumping the water to the next engine.
