A fire Thursday evening displaced a family of five at a house in the 15000 block of Southeast 274th Place in Kent.
Firefighters extinguished the fire in about 30 minutes, according to Kent-based Puget Sound Fire. There was extensive damage to the house and minor damage to the residence next door. The fire broke out at about 5:50 p.m.
There were no injuries to the occupants but a firefighter had to be transported to a hospital with burn injuries to his hand.
Due to the location of the address the initial dispatch also included an engine from Mountain View Fire and Rescue. While still enroute the closest engine reported a large thermal column of heat and smoke from several blocks away, according to a Puget Sound Fire news release. Upon their arrival they found a single-story double wide mobile home with an attached carport well engulfed in flames. The heat and flames were causing the fire to spread to the residence next door. All residents of the fire unit had evacuated and there was no one home in the adjoining residence.
The incident was upgraded to a second alarm to bring additional resources to the scene. This was due to the amount of fire involvement and the spread to the second house. The second alarm gave enough staffing to essentially fight two house fires. Fifteen units responded including assistance from Valley Regional Fire Authority, King County Medic One and Zone 3 Rehab. Two police units were also requested to assist with scene control.
While there was extensive damage to the fire unit, the damage to the residence next door was kept to a minimum. The occupants of the fire unit have been displaced including three adults and two older children. They are being assisted by their homeowner’s insurance. The two occupants of the neighboring unit were able to remain in their house.
A cat perished in the fire and a small dog was unaccounted for, according to Puget Sound Fire.
Investigators are trying to determine the cause of the fire.
