A fire caused by discarded smoking debris caused an estimated $50,000 in damages to a condo complex in the 5600 block of South 231st Place.
Firefighters responded just before 10 p.m. on Wednesday after multiple calls to 911, according to a Kent Fire Department Regional Fire Authority media release. A battalion chief arrived first and spotted smoke and flames coming from a condo unit.
The only occupant of the unit got out safely and called 911. King County Medic One evaluated the individual who checked out fine.
Firefighters had the fire out by about 10:40 p.m. The first crew attacked the fire from the outside while the next crew made their way inside to attack the fire and ensure there were no other occupants. They found no other occupants.
A fire investigator ruled the fire to be accidental with the cause being discarded smoking debris.
Responding agencies included the Kent Fire Department, South King Fire & Rescue, King County Medic One, Zone 3 Rehabilitation unit and the Kent Police Department.
