Fire burns homeless camp, brush along Green River in Kent

Nobody injured as firefighters extinguish fire along Frager Road

Firefighters extinguished a fire at a homeless camp Tuesday, June 29 in Kent along Frager Road near the Green River.

Firefighters were dispatched at about 9:13 a.m. to a tree fire near the Peck Bridge and the Old Fishing Hole, according to Capt. Joe Root, spokesperson for Puget Sound Fire. The fire was about 1 mile south of West Meeker Street.

The first arriving engine reported a fire on the bank of the river from an encampment, Root said. Kent Police were not requested because nobody was at the site. There were no injuries.

“It appears that it did spread to the adjacent trees/brush but was quickly extinguished,” Root said.

A second engine company was requested to provide additional water.

“The crews were able to locate an irrigation water supply that allowed then to keep flowing water on the fire rather than having to shuttle water from a hydrant,” Root said.

Root said the fire started in the camp area but the exact cause was undetermined.
