Kent City Council incumbent Brenda Fincher crushed her two opponents in primary election returns Tuesday.
Fincher had 77.4% (6,202 votes) in Tuesday night returns posted by King County Elections. It appears Larry Hussey at 13.5% (1,085 votes) will advance to challenge Fincher on the Nov. 2 general election ballot. Third candidate Bradley Cairnes had 7.4% (594 votes). The two candidates with the most votes advance to November.
Fincher, who easily defeated Russ Hanscom in the 2017 general election, emphasized during her campaign that she led passage of renter protections, funding for mental health counseling for Kent youth and made accessibility improvements to city council meetings.
Fincher defeated Toni Troutner in a close race in 2015 to fill out a term after Ken Sharp resigned from the council. The council appointed Fincher in 2014 to replace Sharp, but she was required to run for the seat the next year.
Hussey, who works as a day trader, said marijuana is a key issue. He wants the city to opt out of the state’s marijuana law that allows it to be bought at specialized stores, although Kent does not allow marijuana to be sold or produced in the city.
Cairnes is a professional magician who claims police officers and other government officials in the region are acting outside the scope of their oath for office.
