The Sound Transit Board on Thursday welcomed Fife Mayor Kim Roscoe as the newest member of the Sound Transit Board of Directors representing Pierce County.
Roscoe was nominated to serve on the board by Bruce Dammeier, the Pierce County executive and a Sound Transit Board member. The Pierce County Council confirmed her appointment. Roscoe’s term on the 18-member board extends through 2020. She replaced Steilacoom Mayor Ron Lucas, who stepped down from the role.
Roscoe has been a member of the Elected Leadership Group for the Tacoma Dome Link Extension project for the past year.
“I am honored to serve Pierce County as a member of the Sound Transit Board,” Roscoe said in a Sound Transit news release. “There are a number of important transit projects coming to the South Sound in the next several years with the Federal Way Link Extension, the Tacoma Dome Link Extension and construction of the Hilltop Tacoma Link Extension currently underway. I want to help ensure these projects bring the benefits of more transit options to the South Sound.”
Roscoe also will serve on the board’s Rider Experience and Operations Committee.
“Sound Transit’s upcoming investments in Pierce County will dramatically expand residents’ access to congestion-free commuting options in response to rising traffic,” said Sound Transit CEO Peter Rogoff. “Commuters will see expanded Sounder service to meet the fast-growing demand, Tacoma’s connection to the regional light rail network, and the expansion of the existing Tacoma Link system. Mayor Roscoe has proven herself to be a thoughtful and engaged elected official on transportation matters. She will bring an important voice to our board representing Pierce County residents.”
Sound Transit plans to extend light rail from SeaTac through Kent to Federal Way in 2024, and from Federal Way to the Tacoma Dome in 2030.
The board in March is expected to select potential sites for a new light rail vehicle operations and maintenance facility in south King County, including three locations in Kent. Two sites are on the former Midway Landfill and one at the location of Lowe’s hardware store and Dick’s Drive-In.
