With smoke coming from his sister’s car and the brakes not working, Riley Woodard needed to do something to slow down the car.
They had heard a knocking sound, but it was really other motorists honking, warning them their car was on fire.
His niece Kastin was in a carseat behind her mom, Kalee Johnson.
“I kind of opened up the door a little bit to get the wind to slow us down,” he said, as he stood with family members alongside West Valley Highway Monday afternoon just south of South 196th Street.
“The first thing I thought as we stopped was grab the baby,” he said.
He jumped out, ran around the car, grabbed Kastin from the carseat and carried her about 15 feet away from the car.
Kaylee ran toward him and he called 911. Everyone was safe.
It was a “little scary. But it’s not the worst thing that’s happened today, so far,” he said.
They were going to see their mother, who was just taken to a hospital by ambulance.
