Escape
A man waiting to be booked into the Kent city jail reportedly tried to escape through a hole in a restroom wall before a guard spotted him in a crawl space above the wall.
Kent Police arrested the man for investigation of second-degree escape in connection with the incident at about 9 p.m. Feb. 22 at the city jail, 1230 Central Ave.S.
The guard became suspicious after the man remained in a restroom for 5 to 7 minutes after he had allowed the man to use a restroom, according to the police report.
The guard knocked on the bathroom door, but did not get an answer. The guard then opened the door and found an empty restroom.
A trash can/towel dispenser had been pulled out of the wall. That created enough space for the man to crawl through the hole. The guard heard a sound above him, looked through the hole and spotted the man in a crawl space.
The man climbed down to the restroom and guards placed him in a holding cell. Guards had placed the jail in temporary lockdown until they had the man back in custody.
The guard told police the man could not have escaped the jail facility from the crawl space because all of the air vents are securely fastened.
Police initially took the man to the jail after officers arrested him for investigation of obstructing, theft and a felony escape warrant.
Assault
Police arrested a woman for investigation of fourth-degree assault and third-degree malicious mischief after she allegedly pushed her husband against a table and hit him in the eye with her hand during a dispute at about 4 a.m. Feb. 21 at an apartment in the 25000 block of 106th Avenue Southeast.
The man told officers he did not know if his wife used a closed fist or open hand to hit him, according to the police report. An officer noticed swelling under the man’s eye. The husband said a glass candle fell to the floor and broke when she pushed him against a table.
The wife told police she got in an argument with her husband because he didn’t come home until about 3 a.m. and she found female sunglasses in his bag that didn’t belong to her. The woman denied that she pushed or hit her husband.
The woman told officers she did break a television screen before her husband got home because she was upset he was late.
Stolen property
Officers arrested a man and a woman for investigation of possessing stolen property after they reportedly took stereo speakers out of a car Feb. 22 in a hotel parking lot in the 22500 block of 83rd Avenue South.
A woman called 911 to report someone had pried open her car door and taken two, 15-inch speakers from the vehicle, according to the police report. The woman then saw the speakers stuck inside a nearby vehicle.
Police checked with a hotel clerk to match a room with the car. Officers knocked on the hotel room, but nobody answered.
An officer in an unmarked car watched the vehicle with the speakers as other officers sought a search warrant for the car. A man and a woman then got into the car, and officers stopped the vehicle.
The custom-made speakers, worth about $500, were returned to the owner.
Assault
An argument between a husband and wife over the husband retiring from his job reportedly turned into a fight at about 7 p.m. Feb. 22 at a home in the 27300 block of 111th Place Southeast.
Officers arrested the husband for investigation of fourth-degree assault after he allegedly grabbed his wife’s wrist and punched her in the eye, according to the police report.
The man told his wife that she didn’t appreciate the home and lifestyle he provided for her. The couple yelled at each other as they went to the garage.
The husband told officers his wife threw a spatula at him and threw jumper cables on the hood of his car.
