The Kent Valley Ice Centre reopened Monday after a fire in an electrical panel late Sunday morning shut down the skating rink at 6015 S. 240th St., for one day.
Puget Sound Fire was initially dispatched to a sprinkler alarm at 11:30 a.m. Sunday, that was upgraded to a commercial building fire after reports were received of smoke coming from the compressor room used for the ammonia-based cooling system, according to the Puget Sound Regional Fire Authority.
Staff in the facility quickly and safely evacuated everyone from the building, and there were no injuries.
Firefighters found a large electrical panel that had caught fire, activating the sprinkler system. By isolating the electrical system, the fire was quickly extinguished. There was no danger of an ammonia leak.
According to the investigator, the fire is considered accidental.
The center is open for public sessions 2:30 to 5 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 24; 2 to 5 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 25; and has three sessions on each day the rest of the week. For a complete schedule, go to kentvalleyicecentre.net.
In addition to ice skating, the center features an NHL regulation ice rink, five batting cages for baseball and softball practice, a comprehensive pro shop, a cafe and sports bar and an 18-hole mini golf course.
