The woman who died in Kent last week when her car hit a tree has been identified as Diamond Ligan, a 50-year-old Federal Way woman.

Ligan was driving southbound along the East Valley Highway at about 2:15 p.m. on June 9 near South 200th Street when her four-door Oldsmobile left the road and smashed into a tree. The highway also is known as 84th Avenue South.

“The driver reacted to go around a large truck making a right turn onto 200th,” said Kent Police spokesman Jarod Kasner in an email. “They were both going southbound as she swerved to go around the truck, she tried to correct it back and went off the road and struck the tree.”

Kasner said it is unknown how fast Ligan was driving. Other traffic slowed for the truck but she didn’t slow down. No brake lights were seen on her car by witnesses. There were no skid marks at the scene.

Ligan was alone in the car. She was identified this week by the King County Medical Examiner’s Office, which listed her cause of death as blunt force injuries to the body.

When Kent police officers and firefighters arrived at the crash, they found Ligan pinned inside the car and smoke coming from the engine. Firefighters removed her from the car, and flames were extinguished. She was unconscious as firefighters and medics attempted to stabilize her. She died at the scene.

Friends and relatives set up a memorial at the crash site.
