Investigators are sifting through ashes to determine what started a house fire at about 2:15 p.m. Wednesday in the 3800 block of South 249th Street.
No people were home during the fire but a dog and cat died from the high heat and smoke, according to a Kent Fire Department Regional Fire Authority media release. Firefighters tried to resuscitate the animals.
Crews from the Kent Fire Department and South King Fire and Rescue were dispatched to the single-story house. When firefighters arrived they found smoke coming from the eaves of the house.
Once the crew made entry into the house through the front door, they found that the smoke level was down to the floor. The fire started in the living room area and crews were able to extinguish it quickly.
Firefighters found a smoke alarm as a small pile of plastic on the carpeting, completely melted from the intense heat.
