The 33rd Legislative District Democrats nominated Kent City Councilwoman Elizabeth Albertson Tuesday night to fill the state House seat being vacated by State Rep. Dave Upthegrove, D-Des Moines.
Albertson’s nomination will go before the Metropolitan King County Council for approval, possibly Jan. 6 or 13. Albertson decided not to seek a third four-year term on the City Council in order to run for a state House seat. She would serve one year as a replacement and run for a full term in 2014.
Upthegrove is leaving the Legislature after his election in November to the District 5 seat on the County Council. He will replace Julia Patterson, who decided not to seek re-election, starting on Jan. 1.
The 33rd District covers parts of Kent, Des Moines, SeaTac, Normandy Park and Burien.
Precinct Committee Officers (83 voted) picked Albertson over SeaTac City Councilwoman Mia Gregorson and 33rd Democrat District Chair Omaha Sternberg. Sternberg said in an email that she was not a serious contender as she made it clear she supported Albertson.
“I feel that Elizabeth was the stronger candidate with a more mature outlook on the future and a better prepared plan for the district,” Sternberg said.
The County Council will consider all three names before making its pick.
Albertson will serve at her final City Council meeting on Tuesday, Dec. 10. The city will host a farewell for Albertson and outgoing Councilwoman Jamie Perry from 6-7 p.m. at City Hall before the meeting.
