Call it a rite of spring.
Every year when the weather starts to improve, Kent Parks gets calls from students looking for ways to fulfill their high school community service requirements.
Park events normally begin with Earth Day, this year on April 20 at Clark Lake Park. There are two others in the spring lineup: Arbor Day, April 27 at West Fenwick Park and National Trails Day, which Kent does earlier than the rest of the country on May 18, at Lake Fenwick Park.
Flyers are posted on www.KentWA.gov/ParkVolunteers a few weeks before the event and pre-registration is required.
There are other opportunities out there for students willing to do a little Internet digging. For example, Green Kent Partnership Stewards are scheduling work parties at their chosen parks and natural areas. Bookmark www.GreenKent.org and check it frequently to see what new work parties are posted.
Other city departments may have community service opportunities as well, and you can find out more at www.KentWA.gov/Volunteer.
If you need a lot of hours – or court-ordered service – these agencies also may be able to help: Kent Youth & Family Services (253-859-0300), the Kent Food Bank (253-520-3550), the Kent Jail (253-856-5960; requires a $30 background check) and, during the summer months, the Kent Farmers’ Market would love your help (253-852-LION).
