Closure of West James Street in Kent delayed a week

The closure of a portion of West James Street in Kent has been delayed for a week and is expected to start on Monday, July 15.

“It was a contractor decision due to availability of people and materials,” said city spokesperson Dana Neuts in an email Monday about the reasons for the delay.

Drivers will find West James Street closed through Aug. 30 between 64th Avenue South and Lakeside Boulevard East so crews can install a new 30-inch stormwater pipe to help reduce flooding. The pipe will redirect stormwater from 64th Avenue into the Green River, according to city officials.

After the pipe installation, crews will temporarily close the Hogan Park at Russell Road north parking lot in early September. When the work is done, crews will close Russell Road temporarily between Lakeside Boulevard East and Hogan Park.

Access to the Kent Valley Ice Centre, Hogan Park and the Green River Trail will be maintained throughout construction. Posted detours will be in place during each construction phase.

Construction is anticipated to be completed by fall. The construction cost is $1.7 million and will be funded from the city’s drainage utility fund. Commercial storm drainage rates are calculated on impervious surfaces. Residential customers are billed a flat monthly rate of $12.81.
