City of Kent taking registrations for Community Police Academy | Update

All spots are filled

All spots for the Kent Police Department’s Spring Community Police Academy are filled.

Due to an overwhelming response, applications for the virtual session of the academy are now closed, according to a police statement on Tuesday, March 2. The department will offer another session in the fall with dates to be determined.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, all sessions will be held virtually via Zoom. Classes will be on Wednesday evenings, for eight weeks, starting April 7 and ending on May 26. The sessions are from 6:30 to 9 p.m.

The academy is delivered in a series of classes that offer straightforward, candid information regarding daily and specialized operations of the police department, while defining the agency’s role in the community. A wide range of law enforcement topics will be discussed to include an overview of law enforcement, recruiting, traffic enforcement, investigations, narcotics, gangs, community education, use of force, stress and chaplaincy and K-9 units.

There is no cost for participating in the academy. It is open to any adult 18 years or older that lives, works or has an interest in the city of Kent and its police department. Space is limited and pre-registration is required.

Applications are available online at kentwa.gov under Community Police Academy Application. For security reasons all applicants must pass a background check. Persons with a felony conviction or recent misdemeanor conviction are not eligible to participate.

For additional information, email swood@kentwa.gov.

When restrictions are lifted on public gatherings, the department will offer a one-day workshop featuring tours of Valley Communications (911 call and dispatch center), the city correctional facility and the use-of-force simulator. Upon completion of a Community Police Academy, participants will be allowed to participate a four-hour ride along with a patrol officer (COVID restrictions dependent).
