City historian Jack Becvar – the first president of the Greater Kent Historical Society – has died.
Becvar, 85, died peacefully May 25 at his Kent home. He served as president of the Greater Kent Historical Society from 1992-96. He led the effort to incorporate the group as a non-profit in 1993 and helped raise funds to open a museum. He was the first executive director of the Kent Historical Museum.
“He worked tirelessly over may long hours, leading in the formation of the society, developing its mission and strategy, developing a relationship with the city and creating a legacy that will continue for generations to come,” according to a statement from the Greater Kent Historical Society.
Becvar also was involved with the Kent Downtown Partnership.
“It is with a heavy heart to let you know that Jack Becvar, who was very involved with the Kent Downtown Partnership’s Design Committee and a city historian has passed away,” read a Kent Downtown Partnership statement. “Jack will be missed dearly.”
Becvar graduated in 1952 from Kent-Meridian High School, part of the first graduating class from the new school. He worked for Boeing. He was an active member in the Puget Sound Theatre Organ Society.
Survivors include his wife of 59 years, MaryLou; daughters Robin and Jackie; two sisters, Helen and Sheri; four grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
• A memorial service is set for 1 p.m. Friday, June 29, at First Christian Church of Kent, 11717 SE 240th St.
