Children catch a fish in Kent at the Old Fishing Hole

Annual event gives kids a chance to learn about fishing

More than 100 children participated in the 2023 Kent Parks Fishing Experience to cast a line and catch one of the thousands of trout brought in for the annual event.

It was the first time fishing for many of the children. Participants had to be 14 years old or younger and could catch up to two fish each for free, according to Kent Parks.

The event took place on a sunny May 20 at the Old Fishing Hole, 24945 Frager Road, just south of the Meeker Street Bridge and Riverbend Golf Complex. Rotary Club of Kent and Kent Parks presented the fishing day for youth. Volunteers help teach the kids how to fish.

“It is hard to tell who has more fun, the kids or the Rotarians,” according to a Rotary Club of Kent statement. “This noncompetitive event focuses on fishing techniques, safety around water and environmental stewardship.”

Each participant partnered with an experienced guide for a fishing lesson and opportunity to catch a trout. All fishing equipment was provided for the participants.
