Residents can help the city of Kent celebrate its 125th anniversary at a reception at 6 p.m. Tuesday, May 19 at City Hall, 220 Fourth Ave. S.

Immediately following the reception, a special proclamation will be read during the 7 p.m. City Council meeting.

“Kent has come a long way since it was first incorporated on May 28, 1890 with a population of 793,” Mayor Suzette Cooke said. “Now as a hub of innovation with over 124,000 residents, we’re a globally connected community with so much progress and history to recognize.

“Our 125th anniversary is an important milestone. I encourage residents to join us for this proclamation to honor Kent’s legacy and look forward to our community’s future.”

Cooke said all former elected city officials are invited to attend to share their most memorable Kent milestone while in office.

The reception will feature visual displays including photos of Kent streets, businesses and community life from the early 1900s and a birthday cake provided by Sweet Themes Bakery.

The city is recognizing the anniversary with free posters for the public. Posters will be available at reception or at the following locations during regular business hours after May 19:

• Kent City Hall, 220 Fourth Ave. S.

• Kent Historical Museum, 855 E. Smith St.

• Kent Chamber of Commerce, 524 W. Meeker St., Suite 1

• Kent Downtown Partnership, 202 West Gowe St., Suite A
