Kent Police say at least 10 Honda vehicles from the 1990s have been stolen and later recovered over the last few weeks in a 12-block area of north Kent.
Police believe that the suspects work or live near the area north of James Street and east of Washington Avenue and are using the stolen vehicles as transportation, as well as stripping and removing property from the cars, according to an April 8 media release.
An attempted theft of a Honda occurred March 16 at about 5:20 p.m. near the 6400 block of South 228th Street and was captured on a surveillance camera from a nearby business. The black and white images show the two suspects attempting to steal an early 1990s Honda parked in a business parking lot. The suspects were unable to get the car started and police later found extensive damage to the vehicle’s steering column and ignition switch. The suspects fled the scene in another four-door Honda that had a distinctive bicycle rack on the roof. The camera was unable to capture the license plate.
Investigators are seeking information regarding that stolen-vehicle attempt and any suspicious activity that may help identify the suspects and prevent further thefts.
“Statistics show that early model Hondas are one of the most stolen vehicles in Washington,” said officer Kevin Bateman. “We are working diligently to arrest those who are responsible for vehicle thefts and are seeking information from the public.”
If anyone has information regarding the identity of the suspects or the theft in the March 16 incident, they are asked to contact Bateman at 253-856-5800.
Vehicle owners are urged to take extra steps to keep their cars safe. Follow these police tips to enhance the security of your vehicle:
• Secure your vehicle every time you park. Doors locked, windows rolled up, alarm system activated.
• Avoid leaving valuables inside.
• Consider installing a steering wheel locking device, such as “The Club.” Clubs are available at a reduced cost on the Kent Police Web site at www.ci.kent.wa.us/police.
• Call 9-1-1 to report any suspicious vehicles or individuals.
