Candidates file for Kent-area races for Congress, Legislature

Incumbents face challengers in two Congressional contests and four state House races

Kent voters will have several options among incumbents and challengers this year in races for Congress and the state Legislature.

May 6-10 was filing week for candidates. The two candidates with the most votes on the Aug. 6 primary ballot will advance to the Nov. 5 general election.

Here’s a look at the six federal and state districts that include a portion of Kent:

Congress

District 8

• *Kim Schrier, D-Sammamish

• Carmen Goers, R-Auburn

• Keith Arnold, D-Auburn

• Imraan Siddiqi, D-Sammamish

*Incumbent

Notes: Schrier seeking fourth two-year term in district that stretches from portions of King and Pierce counties east to Ellensburg and Wenatchee. She first won seat in 2018 after Republican Dave Reichert decided not to seek reelection. …Goers, a commercial banker in Kent, lost in the 47th Legislative District House primary in 2022. …Arnold has lost in District 8 primary races against Smith six times since he first filed in 2012. …Siddiqi is executive director of the Seattle-based Council on American–Islamic Relations (CAIR), a Muslim civil rights and advocacy group.

District 9

• Melissa Chaudhry, D-Seattle

• Paul Martin, R-Renton

• David Ishii, Bi-partisan, Seattle

• Mark Greene, R-Federal Way

• *Adam Smith, D-Bellevue

*Incumbent

Notes: Smith has held the District 9 seat since 1997. …Ishii filed for the seat in 2022 but then withdrew. …Greene has lost several Legislative District 30 House races and lost the primary to Smith and two other candidates in 2014.

• *Tina Orwall, D-Des Moines

Notes: Orwall has represented the 33rd District since 2009.

Position 2

• *Mia Su-Ling Gregerson, D-SeaTac

• Casey Esmond, no party preference, Des Moines

*Incumbent

Notes: Gregerson has represented the 33rd District since 2013.

47th District

Position 1

• *Debra Enteman, D-Kent

• Kyle Lyebyedyev, R-Covington

*Incumbent

Notes: Entenman defeated Lyebyedyev in 2022 and 2020 after first earning a seat in 2018 when she defeated Republican incumbent Mark Hargrove.

Position 2

• Ted Cooke, R-Covington

• *Chris Stearns, D-Auburn

• Brian Lott, R-Auburn

*Incumbent

Notes: Stearns seeking a second term after winning in 2022. …Cooke lost in primary to Stearns in 2022. He lost general election race for seat to Democrat Pat Sullivan in 2020 and 2018. …Lott lost his race for the Auburn City Council in 2023.
