Free eye exams slated

Evergreen Eye Care will provide free eye exams and eye-glass cleaning for seniors from 11 a.m. to noon Sept. 3 at the Des Moines Activity Center, 2045 S. 216th St., Des Moines. Seniors should call ahead for 15-minute appointments. For details, call 206-878-1642.

Dance center offers open house

Church celebrates its heritage

Kent United Methodist Church will have a special heritage celebration at the 9:30 a.m. worship service Sept. 7 at the church, 11010 S.E. 248th St. During the service, the church will commemorate its history – stretching back to the 1860s – with a special service, video and ringing of old church bells. Book sale planned

The Friends of the Kent Regional Library will present their annual book sale Sept. 19 through 21 at the library, 212 Second Ave. N. Sale hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 19 and 20, and 1 to 4 p.m. Sept. 21. Books cost 50 cents; videos, audio books and DVDs are $1 each. Proceeds benefit library programs sponsored by the Friends. New eatery opens

Diners in Kent have a new place to sate their appetites, since Thinh Pho opened Aug. 31 near the corner of Central Avenue and Meeker Street in downtown Kent. The new restaurant is focused primarily on Pho, the traditional Vietnamese noodle soup made with beef, chicken or soy. According to the owners, the restaurant will feature traditional family recipes that have been updated for modern tastes.

Thinh Pho is located at 320 E. Meeker St., Kent.
