Crews in Renton made quick work of the old Benson Road South Bridge Saturday, as they completed the demolition of the nearly 40-year-old bridge in about six hours. Crews began shortly before 4:30 a.m. and had the bridge completely down by 10 a.m. Both directions of I-405 from SR 167 to SR 169 (Maple Valley Highway) will remain closed until 11 a.m. Sunday, as DOT makes other improvements to the roadway. Road officials are expecting the heaviest congestion between the hours of 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. on I-5, I-405, SR 167, I-90 and SR 520 as drivers use alternate routes to avoid the closure.
Even though the bridge demolition work has been completed, crews will use the remaining hours to replace damaged concrete panels, install signs, install sign bridges, work on storm drainage, clean up and safely reopen the freeway by Sunday before noon.
