This week will see many kids in the state return to school. The Kent Fire Department Regional Fire Authority asks everyone to do what they can to keep our children safe.
Parents:
• If your kids walk to school, look for a route that has sidewalks, crosswalks, and is well traveled.
• If your children ride a bus, remind them to watch the bus driver for directions.
• Make sure your kids wear clothing and carry backpacks with reflective stripes.
• Weigh backpacks. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, a backpack should weigh no more than 10 percent of your child’s weight.
• Make sure children dress appropriately for the weather.
Students:
• Never accept a ride in a vehicle with anyone not approved by parents.
• Obey all crosswalk signals and crossing guards.
• Get a good night’s sleep and remember children need more sleep than adults.
• Eat a good breakfast each morning.
• Be a good role model for others, especially younger children.
Drivers:
• Watch for school buses and remember it is illegal to pass a school bus loading/unloading children.
• Obey speed limits in school zones.
• Children can be unpredictable. Drivers must be ready for anything.
• Never stop on a crosswalk. This can force pedestrians into traffic.
• Children riding in the front seats of vehicles are 40 percent more likely to be injured in a crash.
Weather:
• Days will continue to get darker earlier. Inclement weather also limits sunlight and visibility.
• Wet weather can mean wet clothing. Plan ahead with extra clothes for these days.
• Wet roads mean increased stopping distances. Drive accordingly.
