New art is popping up in Kent on five traffic signal control boxes.
The Kent Arts Commission announced the completion and installation of the vinyl art wraps, intended to curb graffiti and create a visually dynamic and interesting environment in the city.
This opportunity was open to professional and emerging visual artists residing in Washington State and working in any medium, as long as the final artwork could be translated and digitally reproduced on a two-dimensional vinyl wrap, according to a city news release.
Five artists were commissioned to design artwork for different box locations – selected based on visibility and graffiti control issues:
• SE 240th and 104th: Jean Bradbury
• SE 256th and 101st: Naoko Morisawa
• Willis and Highway 167: Jill Erickson
• James and Interurban Trail: Vikram Madan
• James and Showare: Fin’es Scott
The Traffic Cabinet Wrap Project is a partnership among the Kent Arts Commission, Kent Police Department, Public Works Department and the office of Economic and Community Development. The project is part of the city’s Public Art Program.
