American Legion Post 15 of Kent is hosting an open house Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The event is designed to raise community awareness about the American Legion and its activities, as well as try to drum up increased membership among younger veterans, said Terence Finn, post second-vice president.
“We got a lot of young soldiers coming home,” Finn said.
The American Legion is a private, non-profit organization devoted to community service and helping fellow veterans cut through the bureaucracy to get the benefits and help they earned.
“We’ve all done that and we know how to navigate through the red tape,” Finn said.
Though the group is a private organization, Finn said the Kent Post will be open to the public Sunday. Hot dogs, soda and chips will be served and there will be information booths on hand from the Legion, the Women’s Auxiliary and the Sons of the American Legion, among others.
In addition, an honor guard demonstration is scheduled for 1 and 3 p.m.
Finn said membership in the post is $35 per year and is not just open to those who have served in the military, adding that the group’s community service is not just directed to members.
“They don’t have to be a member to reap the benefits of the American Legion,” he said. “We’re making the community aware of what we’re about.”
