Airways Brewing Company recently joined members of the Kent Police Department to make a special beer in memory of Officer Diego Moreno, who died in the line of duty on July 22, 2018.
The inspiration for the brew – a Northwest-style IPA featuring citra, mosaic and simcoe hops – came from friends who were asked to create a beer in Moreno’s name. They came up with 2K56 IPA, named after a call sign frequently used by Moreno.
The new brew will be officially tapped at a fundraising event on Friday, Aug. 2, from 4 to 8 p.m. at the brewery, 8611 S 212th St., Kent. Proceeds for the 21-and-over event support the Diego Moreno Memorial Scholarship the family established through a foundation with Washington State University. The scholarship is available each year to a graduating high school senior who is a certified major in criminal justice.
The fundraiser will include a raffle in which guests can buy tickets for a $1 donation each and drop them in the buckets by the items they want to be in the drawing for. Items donated so far include a four-hour police ride-along; rounds of drinks for six at either Airways location; cupcakes from Sweet Themes Bakery, restaurant gift cards; and beer-, wine- and charcuterie-themed gift baskets. Guests do not have to be present during the drawing to win, and 100 percent of the raffle proceeds will go directly to the scholarship fund.
